The
"studio 45" project was founded at the beginning of 1997
by the BCC label manager together with djs dole and kom. Studio 54s
inspiration comes from the memory of the "good old days"
of disco. In their songs, strings and horns are featured, as in a
classical orchestras. Studio 45 describe their sound as "house
couture".
The studio 54 motto is: "take a disco sample and completely rework
it". They are however not satisfied simply to loop and sample.
It is an important part of the reworking to include their own basslines,
snyths and various sounds, in combination with some select vocal parts.
the tracks from studio 54 however, work perfectly well without samples!
With the release of the very first studio 54 recordings, the international
response was overwhelming, especially the track "I like the sounds"
which was, and still is, an absolute favorite "worldwide"
clubhit! based upon the classic "le spank" by Le Pamplemouse,
and a good 20% faster than the original, the track was licensed to
Definity records/usa, the renowned azuli records in england, and to
formaldehyd records in germany, with remixes from dj sneak, una bomba,
gene farris, jan driver and kate-olivia martinez & joan handie.
After this massive success, came the maxi-singles "studio 54
vol 2 - in memory of gianni versace", and the third studio 54
release, "freak it" which became an absolute club hit in
autumn 1998. The record was featured constantly for months in renowned
and leading dj "hypecharts",and was as a result further
licensed, once again by the cult uk label, azuli. with remixes from
disco elements, pete heller and black science orchestra and studio
54(undercover), "freak it" stormed the british dance charts
to the much coverted no 1 spot, and went on to be placed at number
36 in the official uk sales charts (week 07/99). the video climbed
to number 8 in the mtv-dance-charts.in usa "freak it" was
subsequently released by "nervous records" featuring new
remixes from mood 2 swing and brutal bill, and as a result featured
for weeks in the billboard disco/dance charts.
In april and may 99, studio 54 presented their "live" show
on the germany wide "marlboro casino club tour", with dj
support from Doc Martin, Jef. K, King Britt, DJ Deep, Dozia, Philippe
Zdar (Cassius), Erik Rug and Terence Parker.
Also in may 99, the studio 54 artists decided to change their name
to studio 45, to avoid the confusion of being somehow associated with
the film, studio 54, and the numerous resultant parties, named after
the Film. It should also be noted that the decision to change the
name from studio 54 to studio 45 had nothing whatsoever to do with
any legal questions with regards to ownership of the Name, as has
been suggested.
Since the beginning of 2000, dole and kom have been busy working on
their new project "disco doggies". Under this pseudonym
three maxis have been released, one of which, the "grace and
glamour" 12", achieved placings in all the leading dj charts
and was "record of the month" in the march 2001 issue of
raveline magazine.
At the moment, both artists are working in the studio with musicians
and vocalists. The first fruits of this labour, "studio 45 feat.
panay brooks-" has resulted in the tracks "desire"
and likewise "in the night", achieving imminent release
via wea-deep couture, and the succesfull munich based milk`n`sugar
labels.
until then, in the meantime dole and kom have presented us with two
new releases that are every bit the top quality we would expect from
them, namely disco doggies vol 3 on their own label, and the rhythm,
released world wide on dj-sets.
